Volunteering is a fantastic way to give back to your community and those less fortunate both during the holiday season and throughout the rest of the year. Through websites such as Idealist or VolunteerMatch, you can find opportunities that interest you and are located in your area.

I’ve always enjoyed getting involved through volunteering, donating, and participating and 5k walks. But I never knew that there were other nontraditional ways of volunteering…virtually.

I call this Volunteering for the 21st Century.

After searching around on these volunteer websites, I came across several opportunities that I could participate in virtually through online work. One volunteer position in particular struck my interest, and I immediately reached out to the communications team at this nonprofit, which happens to be based in New Jersey. After an interview and a few signed contracts, I became a permanent volunteer.

How do I volunteer virtually? For over a year, I have been moderating Life Raft Group‘s website content and comments, and I absolutely love it. Through Joomla, I’m learning how to become a webmaster, and I’m perfecting my organizational and time management skills too. And the best part is that I get to help out a great nonprofit every week!

So if you work a full-time job like me, and you’re looking to get involved but have limited free time, try searching for some virtual volunteer opportunities.

Get involved!
